Our Story (Colton's Version)

On March 5th, 2015 both Colton and Yvette were on a dating site online. Yvette was living in Laredo, Texas. She was casting a wide net to places she might want to move to. She saw Colton's profile and liked what she saw...specifically his "kind eyes." She wrote him a quick note.

In Colorado, Colton received an email from a beautiful, smart girl. On Colton's profile he mentioned wanting to do a "Baron Munchausen party" where people dress up in silly clothes, light a roaring fire, drink whiskey and spin tall tales along the lines of a game book The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Yvette commented that this seemed fun. Reading this, and seeing this very cute girl asking about a nerdy activity immediately made Colton wonder if the person writing the email lived in another country and was concocting a devious scam. Why would someone like this reach out to him--and especially out of state? Colton thought about it but decided, eh, he can play along--sure.

But, as emails were exchanged, they got longer and longer. Eventually, they decided to meet on Facetime on their phones.

Colton even asked Yvette on a virtual date. They both put on a terrible B horror movie and watched it "in sync" while on the phone.

Soon, Colton and Yvette were on Facetime every night talking about everything and nothing and sometimes just sitting and enjoying each other's company.

One night Colton said "I love you!" and melted Yvette's heart.

They soon decided to meet in person. Yvette flew out and met Colton at DIA. He took her to the mountains where she was breathless from being with her love...and because of the elevation. They spent a wonderful but too-short time together.

Every few months, Colton or Yvette would fly to meet the other. But every parting was harder.

So, Yvette decided to move to Colorado to be with Colton. They spent several years together and Colton decided to propose. He asked for her parent's permission on a visit to Laredo one Christmas.

Colton then spent time researching diamonds to pick the best ring he could. Being fans of Halloween and the fall, Colton proposed to Yvette in a pumpkin patch on October 13th, 2020 amidst the gourds and COVIDs. Colton's cousin Alisha was hired to snap candid photos.

And here we are!

Our Story (Yvette's Version)

March 5, 2015-She reaches out to lovely lad online because he has “kind eyes and likes Baron Munchausen”.

March 6, 2015-He replies to her message, and a friendship begins. They correspond for nearly a year without ever meeting in person.

February 24, 2016-They finally meet up in Denver and...

February 27, 2016-They both cry in the airport as she heads back home.

-They continue to date from afar using FaceTime and fall for each other’s morbid humor. (insert u make me happy pic handing him her heart). They fly to see each other every few months.

September 9, 2016- She flies to Denver to meet up with her beau again. He takes her for a small hike. Her lungs struggle at the higher elevation, she starts to feel nauseas, and her eyelids nearly stick together from the lovely thin, cold air.

June 22, 2017- She shaves her head to support a friend.

Late July 2017- She moves to Colorado, for they cannot stand to be apart any longer.

April 22, 2018-She nearly has a heart attack watching him practice for the upcoming kayaking season.

June 19, 2018- Better Than Ezra plays at Red Rocks.

Sept. 29-Oct. 2, 2018- His sister gets married in Maine. She nearly falls flat on her face from the slippery rocks, but you know...lighthouses.

March 11, 2019- She nearly has another heart attack as he texts her a picture of himself holding a “small baby” alligator.

March 11, 2020- The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak a global pandemic, and the world was forever changed.

April 28, 2020- She teaches herself to use a sewing machine.

October 13, 2020 in the AM- He stealthily carves out a pumpkin without her seeing or smelling any evidence.

October 13, 2020 2:00pm-She asks herself, “Where is he? He’s been gone a long time.”

October 13, 2020 4:10pm- She says to herself, “Fine, lets go buy pumpkins for the house, but you can’t make me dress up to drive 5 minutes from here.”

October 13, 2020 4:25pm- He asks her, “What’s that thing over there by the scarecrow?” She replies, “How should I know.” He gets down on one knee and proposes to her in the pumpkin patch. She says, “Yes” and cries in his arms. She realizes they have a small audience but continues to hug and kiss the love of her life in a pumpkin patch. Yes, she was wearing baggy yoga pants and a Batman t-shirt. It was the brightest day in an otherwise very strange and dark year.

October 14, 2020-present: They continue to salsa dance together and pick up new hobbies to remain healthy and happy.

Thank you for celebrating with us!

Cast & Crew

Jeremy Holburn

It is mathematically impossible not to love Jeremy. He is a serial hugger because his heart is so big it smothers all opposition and quiets crying babies. Colton met Jeremy through Reese. Jeremy is a boardgame lover and has been a frequent fixture of game nights and "Cabin Cons"—annual boardgame "summits" in the summits. Jeremy is not a fair weather friend. He is there in the good times and there when you need a friend to lean on and listen to and have truthful honest conversations. Jeremy helps people for living because that is who he is. This is not his first rodeo or first time as an officiant.

Reese Lloyd III

Reese I and II were so great that there had to be III. Reese and Colton have been best of friends since dinosaurs roamed the earth (about 5th grade). Gradeschool, middle school, high school, college...that young punk phase between now and senility. Reese and Colton have done it all. Learned about the Internet and email—back when it was exciting to email people. Filmed stop motion. Drawn doodles and stories. Set up servers for online video games. Gone wardriving. Gone geocaching. Hiking. Camping. Ice fishing (which made Colton even more vegetarian. Reese will give people the shirt off his back and his pants. Even when it's not appropriate but you seriously needs pants because someone has to be appropriate and it should be you. Colton was voted "most likely to be the next Bill Gates" in high school. Reese was voted "most likely to be the man behind Colton's success." Colton has yet to sell a software company but Reese kept his end of the deal.

Quinn Buchanan

Quinn is Colton's partner in business crime (not real crime we're actually very upstanding salt-of-the-earth people), and a great friend and Colton's lifelong mentor. Colton met Quinn back when Colton was interning at one of his first actual jobs and his job title was quite literally "art supplies" (as marked in the budget). Quinn took the time to share his love of video game development with Colton and Colton has never gone away. Colton attributes much of what he knows and the jobs he's had to Quinn. Training police officers to deal with dogs and taking bites in the arm, mahjongg games, helping US soldiers disarm bombs and cultural flash points, giant robots, cow hurricanes, football, investment websites, medical sutures, Pirates in Carribeans, real estate, and many other adventures. They love tech, movies, games, books, comics and more and love to "solve the world's problems" much as my dad and his friend Richard do. Quinn has tried to escape Colton by moving to Florida but it didn't work so well. He can't really get away.

Christian Busch

Colton met Chris and his wife Andrea at a D&D game thanks to the late and terribly missed TIMMY! back at Netdevil. Chris and Colton played many hours together and found their interests and views often aligned. The two careened through a whirlwind romance of hobby boardgames and miniatures that found the two referring to each other as "my gaming spouse." Reese, Chris and Colton have done yearly trips to Gencon (75,000-strong boardgame convention), and Cabin Con (5 strong friends strongly gaming in a cabin in the Rockies). And while COVID cooled much of that, Chris and Colton's blazing embers have yet to die down--and despite even being separated now by many miles and a gulf of land (most of which is Texas), they are still there for each other. While weekly dinners and gaming long into the night is soarly missed, Chris still runs with the pack in what everyone wants to call the metaverse but is really just a fancy name for the Internet. When a friend is needed, never fear. Chris is here!

Dr. Lauren Swords

Yvette met Lauren while living and studying in Austin, TX. They bonded over many science classes and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer tv series. Lauren is one of the most fun-loving and kindest people in Yvette’s life. Yvette describes Lauren as her “partner in crime” and jokes about her “knowing where all the bodies are buried”. Though they live in different states now, whenever they meet up, it is as if no time has gone by. When they are together, laughter usually ensues. They have seen each other through life’s ups and downs, and Yvette loves her to pieces. Lauren is the proverbial best friend and considers her a sister. Yvette is proud to call Lauren her Matron of Honor.

Dr. Mollee Farrell

Yvette met Mollee while living and studying in Indiana. They became especially close upon attending Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball concert together. Mollee is one of the sweetest and empathetic people Yvette knows. They have been each other’s shoulders to cry on when times were tough and have had a lot of laughs too. Yvette can’t thank Mollee enough for all the car rides to the airport with Salem the dog in tow. Mollee is one of the few people in Yvette’s life that she can be 100% herself with and fear no judgement. Yvette considers her as family and is proud to have her as a dear friend and Bridesmaid in her wedding.
